What gets checked during refurbishment?
A proper refurbishment isn't just a wipe and a clean. Here's what should happen to every laptop, and what happens at Whynew:
1. Intake and security
The device is logged, and we check it isn't locked to a previous owner's account (iCloud, BIOS password, company management).
2. Hardware testing
- Processor under load, and temperatures
- Memory test
- Storage health (SMART data for SSDs and hard drives)
- Battery capacity versus its original design capacity
- Display: dead pixels, backlight bleed, brightness
- Keyboard (every key), touchpad, TrackPoint
- USB, HDMI, audio and charging ports
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, webcam, speakers and microphone
3. Repair
Anything that fails gets repaired or the part is replaced.
4. Data wipe and OS
Storage is securely wiped and a genuine OS is installed.
5. Cleaning and grading
Deep cleaning inside and out, then an honest cosmetic grade.
6. Final check
One last functional test before it's packed. Read our full FQC criteria.
