About this device
Our take: Buy it if you want something reliable for students and schools and don't want to overpay for new.
This Lenovo ThinkPad X440 is the kind of machine that quietly gets the job done, day after day. The X-series is Lenovo's compact business line — small enough for a sling bag, tough enough to be a daily driver. Plenty of travelling salespeople and field staff lived on these. This compact 12.5-inch ThinkPad is an older model; small, sturdy and fine for light work on the move.
The Core i5 is the sweet spot for most people — quick enough for multitasking, Office, coding and online classes, without the extra cost of an i7. This 4th-generation chip is older, but paired with an SSD it still handles documents, browsing, email and video calls comfortably. 8 GB RAM is the right amount for study, office work and normal multitasking. Storage is a 256 GB SSD, so start-up and file loading are fast. The 12.5-inch HD screen is fine for documents, browsing and video.
Build and everyday use
12.5–13.3 inch screen and around 1.2–1.3 kg. It fits on an aircraft tray table and doesn't take over a café table. The keyboard is smaller than a 14-inch ThinkPad's but still far better than most compact laptops. It runs Windows 10 Pro. One honest note: Microsoft ended free security updates for Windows 10 in October 2025, so this is best for offline or office-network use, or enrol it in Microsoft's paid Extended Security Updates. Ask us if you'd prefer a Windows 11 option.
Upgrades
Older X2x0 models have a single RAM slot you can upgrade; newer X280/X390/X13 models have soldered memory, so choose carefully. The SSD is replaceable on all of them.
Who it suits
People who travel a lot, sales teams, and students who walk between classes all day. It sits in our picks for students, schools, small businesses.
Condition and what's in the box
Grade B+ means visible cosmetic wear such as scratches or small dents — it works exactly like a Grade A unit and costs less. Every unit is tested on our checklist, securely wiped, cleaned and shipped with a compatible charger, a GST invoice and 12-month warranty.
