Refurbished vs used vs second-hand: what's the difference?
People use these words loosely, but they mean quite different things when you're the one handing over money.
- Second-hand / used: sold as it is, usually by the previous owner. Nobody has necessarily tested it. No warranty, often no bill, and no returns.
- Refurbished: tested, repaired where needed, wiped, cleaned, graded and sold by a business — with a warranty and a return window.
Why it matters
A used laptop can be a bargain, but you're taking all the risk. You can't easily tell whether the battery is about to die, whether the hard drive is failing, or whether it's even legally the seller's to sell. A refurbished laptop moves that risk onto the seller: if something's wrong, it's their job to fix it.
A quick rule of thumb
If the price difference is small, buy refurbished. If you're technical, can inspect the machine in person and are happy to take the risk, used can save you a little more.
