What are the disadvantages of a refurbished laptop?
It's worth being honest about the downsides. Here they are:
- Older hardware: refurbished laptops are usually two to five years old. They're fast enough for most work, but not the latest.
- Battery wear: batteries lose capacity with age. A good seller tests them and replaces weak ones, but it won't be brand new.
- Cosmetic marks: depending on the grade, there may be scratches or scuffs.
- Seller warranty: the warranty usually comes from the refurbisher, not the brand, so the seller's reliability matters.
- Windows version: laptops older than 8th-gen Intel don't officially support Windows 11. Windows 10 or 11?
- Less choice of configurations: you choose from what's in stock rather than configuring exactly what you want.
How to reduce the risks
Buy 8th gen or newer, choose an SSD, check the battery, and buy from a seller with a clear warranty and return window.
