Here's a ThinkPad X-series that has already proven itself in a corporate fleet, now tested and ready for its second life with you. The X-series is Lenovo's compact business line — small enough for a sling bag, tough enough to be a daily driver. Plenty of travelling salespeople and field staff lived on these. The X280 slimmed down the X-series and added four-core 8th-gen chips; it's very light.

The Core i5 is the sweet spot for most people — quick enough for multitasking, Office, coding and online classes, without the extra cost of an i7. 8th generation was a big jump for Intel: it was the first time thin business laptops got four cores instead of two. In practice that means noticeably smoother multitasking than older models — this is the generation we most often recommend. With 8 GB of memory, switching between Chrome, Word and Zoom stays smooth. A 256 GB SSD keeps everything snappy — no waiting around for the hard drive. The 14-inch Full HD screen (with touch) gives you sharp text and room for two windows side by side.

Build and everyday use

12.5–13.3 inch screen and around 1.2–1.3 kg. It fits on an aircraft tray table and doesn't take over a café table. The keyboard is smaller than a 14-inch ThinkPad's but still far better than most compact laptops. It comes with genuine Windows 11 Pro installed and activated.

Upgrades

Older X2x0 models have a single RAM slot you can upgrade; newer X280/X390/X13 models have soldered memory, so choose carefully. The SSD is replaceable on all of them.
