About this device
Our take: A dependable HP EliteBook that gives you business-grade quality for the price of a budget laptop.
If you want HP EliteBook quality without paying new-laptop prices, this is the one to look at. The EliteBook 800 series is HP's premium business laptop — the one HP sold to large companies that wanted something a step above the ProBook. Better materials, better screen, better keyboard. The 840 G7 is a 10th-gen EliteBook with Wi-Fi 6 on many units — very current for the price.
The Core i5 is the sweet spot for most people — quick enough for multitasking, Office, coding and online classes, without the extra cost of an i7. 10th-generation Intel processors are quad-core, efficient and fully supported by Windows 11. It will feel quick for years of normal use. 8 GB of RAM is comfortable for everyday multitasking — browser, Office, music and a video call. Storage is a 256 GB SSD, so start-up and file loading are fast. The 14-inch HD screen is fine for documents, browsing and video.
Build and everyday use
Aluminium body, about 1.5 kg, with a solid, premium feel. Backlit keyboard and a good touchpad; many units have a fingerprint reader. It comes with genuine Windows 11 Pro installed and activated.
Upgrades
Most 840 models have two RAM slots and an M.2 SSD — easy to upgrade.
