Is Windows on a refurbished laptop legal?
Yes, when it's done properly.
There are two common legitimate routes:
- The original OEM licence: many laptops have a Windows key embedded in their firmware by the manufacturer. A clean install of the matching edition activates automatically.
- A refurbisher licence: Microsoft has licensing programmes for registered refurbishers to supply Windows on refurbished PCs.
What isn't legal is pirated or "cracked" Windows, or keys bought from dubious sources. These can stop working, fail updates or carry malware.
Your checklist
Check that Windows says "activated", that there's no watermark, and that Windows Update works normally.
