10 Karnataka Breakfast Dishes Worth Waking Up For
A Karnataka breakfast is never an afterthought. In Bengaluru it is eaten standing at a darshini counter with a steel tumbler of filter coffee. In Mysuru it might be a leisurely plate of masale dose. In Hubballi and Dharwad it is more likely to be something spicy with a jowar rotti. Ask anyone from the state about their favourite and you will get a strong opinion.
These are the ten plates we come back to most, with links to our tested recipes where we have them.
The darshini classics
Darshinis are Bengaluru's self-service tiffin rooms, and they set the standard for a Karnataka breakfast in the city.
1. Idli and vada
Soft, steamed idli served with coconut chutney and sambar, usually alongside a crisp medu vada. The idli has deep roots here: a Kannada text from around 920 CE mentions "iddalige".
2. Masala dose
The most famous Karnataka breakfast of all. A thin, golden masala dosa is folded over spiced potato palya. The Mysuru style spreads a red chutney inside first.
3. Khara bath and kesari bath
Order "chow chow bath" and you get both on one plate: spicy khara bath and sweet, saffron-coloured kesari bath, both made with rava.
4. Set dose
Three small, spongy dosas served in a stack with vegetable sagu and chutney. They are thicker and softer than a crisp masala dose.
Breakfast from home kitchens
At home, a Karnataka breakfast is often quicker and made from whatever is in the kitchen.
5. Uppittu
Our everyday upma: roasted rava cooked with onion, green chilli and curry leaves, ready in 20 minutes.
6. Akki rotti
Rice-flour rotti patted by hand straight onto the pan, flavoured with onion, dill and coconut. Akki rotti is best eaten hot with a spoon of butter.
7. Avalakki
Flattened rice tossed with a tempering of mustard, peanuts and turmeric. Our masala poha takes 15 minutes.
8. Bisi bele bath
Heavier than most, but many families eat bisi bele bath for a weekend breakfast, topped with ghee and khara boondi.

North Karnataka mornings
9. Jolada rotti with ennegai
Jowar flatbread with stuffed brinjal curry. Jolada rotti is the daily bread of the north of the state.
10. Girmit and mirchi bajji
Girmit is a spicy puffed-rice dish from Hubballi, almost always eaten with mirchi bajji. It works as breakfast or an evening snack.
How to plan a week of Karnataka breakfast
Many of these share one base. A single batch of idli and dosa batter covers idli on Monday, masala dose on Tuesday and set dose later in the week. Rava dishes like upma and khara bath take 20 minutes from a standing start, so keep them for rushed mornings. Save bisi bele bath and jolada rotti for the weekend.
Pro tips
- One idli-dosa batter covers three different breakfasts.
- Keep a jar of roasted rava for 20-minute upma and khara bath.
Conclusion
Every district has its own morning ritual, and a Karnataka breakfast can be as quick as avalakki or as slow as a Sunday bisi bele bath. Pick one this week and work your way across the state with our full list of breakfast recipes.
