M-Sand vs River Sand: Which Is Better for Your Home?
River sand has become scarce, expensive and, in many places, illegal to mine. Manufactured sand has filled the gap — and done it well when sourced properly.
The difference
| River sand | M-sand / P-sand | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Rounded | Angular, cubical |
| Silt | Variable | Low if washed |
| Availability | Restricted | Consistent |
Use the right grade
Use concrete M-sand for RCC and plastering P-sand (finer) for plaster. Mixing them up causes cracks and poor finish.
Simple site test
The silt test: fill a jar with sand and salt water, shake and let it settle for three hours. More than 8% silt layer means reject the load.
