Most Bangalore families make the Tirupati trip at least once, and the first time can feel confusing. This checklist is what we tell every first-timer before they board.
Before you leave home
- Photo ID for everyone – Aadhaar works. Keep a printout and the original.
- Traditional clothes – dhoti or kurta-pyjama for men; saree or churidar with dupatta for women. Jeans and shorts are not allowed in the queue.
- A light shawl – overnight buses and the queue complexes can get cold.
- Small cash – for laddus, offerings and snacks.
How the day actually goes
You reach Tirupati early morning, freshen up at the hotel and have breakfast. From there you go up the ghat road to Tirumala. Phones, bags and footwear are deposited before the queue – lockers are available and free.
Free (Sarva) darshan usually takes six to eight hours on weekdays, and longer on weekends, festivals and school holidays. Anyone promising a fixed two-hour darshan is guessing. Carry water and a little patience; the queue compartments have food and drinking water.
Small things that help
- Weekdays (Monday–Thursday) are noticeably calmer.
- Elderly travellers should tell the coordinator in advance – routes with less walking can often be arranged.
- Collect your free laddu with the token you get at darshan; extra laddus can be bought at the counter.
If you would rather not plan any of this yourself, our overnight bus package covers the bus, the fresh-up hotel, breakfast and on-ground help.
